Baltimore City District Judge George M. Lipman received the Robert C. Heeney Award from the Maryland State Bar Association Criminal Law Section.
Retired Montgomery County Circuit Judge Louise G. Scrivener received the Beverly Groner Award from the Family and Juvenile Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association.
Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera received the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award for 2013. The award recognizes contributions and substantial accomplishments in the advancement of the profession, professional achievement, contributions to education and outreach, and mentoring.
District Court of Maryland Chief Judge Ben C. Clyburn was a featured speaker at the Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors Quarterly Meeting Oct. 21 in Pittsburgh. Judge Clyburn, who is vice-chair of the Maryland Access to Justice Commission, took part in a panel discussion about “The Importance of Access to Justice to the Judiciary.” He was joined on the panel by Chief Justice Brent D. Benjamin, Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia; Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille, Pennsylvania Supreme Court; and Magistrate Judge Maureen P. Kelly, U.S. District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania. The moderator was Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow.
Connie Kratovil-Lavelle, executive director, Department of Family Administration, received a “Peacing It Together” Award for 2013 from the Community Conferencing Center for her “commitment to and effective efforts at building community and justice in our neighborhoods.”
The Daily Record presented Leadership in Law awards for 2013 to Harford County Circuit Judge William O. Carr, Calvert County Circuit Judge E. Gregory Wells, Baltimore City Circuit Court Master William Dunn, and Baltimore City Circuit Court Master Hope Tipton.
Prince George’s County Circuit Judge Sean D. Wallace began his term as president of the American College Of Business Court Judges in September. Judge Wallace is the second judge from Maryland to be selected to head the 10-year-old organization. The first was retired Prince George’s County Circuit Judge Steven I. Platt.
Baltimore City Circuit Judge Audrey J Carrion was named chair of the American College of Business Court Judges’ Education Committee at the college’s Annual Meeting and Educational Program in September. Former Education committee chairs include Court of Special Appeals Judge Stuart R. Berger and Court of Special Appeals Judge Albert J. Matricciani Jr.
Carville D. Duncan, Orphans’ Court for Talbot County judge received the Talbot Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award.
Howard County District Court Judge Ricardo Zwaig received the 2013 Outstanding Alumni of the Year award from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Calvert County Circuit Court Judge E. Gregory Wells received a Community Excellence Award at the sixth annual Concerned Black Women of Calvert County luncheon and awards gala.
Prince George’s County Circuit Judge Sheila R. Tillerson Adams was honored by the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter for her contribution to the quality of life for individuals in Southern Maryland, the state and the nation. Judge Adams, administrative judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit (Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties) and Prince George’s County administrative judge, also received a certificate of recognition from the Charles County Commission for being “an outstanding example of a Morganite’s continuing contribution to county, state and nation.”
