Judge M. Kenneth Long, Jr., Named Administrative Judge for
Washington County Circuit Court

(ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- July 13, 2011) Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell has designated Judge M. Kenneth Long, Jr., as administrative judge for the Washington County Circuit Court. Judge Long succeeds Judge John H. McDowell, who had served as Washington County administrative judge since 2008. Judge Long’s appointment became effective on June 29.

“Judge Long has established himself as a leader in the legal and greater community in Washington County,” Judge Bell said. “His tremendous combination of professional legal skills, work ethic, and leadership will be a great asset, and I look forward to working with him in his new role.”

Judge Long received his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland and, after being admitted to the Maryland bar in 1973, began his legal career as a private practitioner. In 1979, he became an assistant state’s attorney for Washington County, and was later promoted to deputy state’s attorney. In 1982, he was elected the State’s Attorney for Washington County, and served until 2004, when he was appointed a District Court judge. In 2006, he was appointed to the Washington County Circuit Court.

A longtime community volunteer, Judge Long has been a member of the Hagerstown Rotary Club since 1979, serving as president from 1990 to 1991. He was a board member for the Washington County Hospital Association from 2001 to 2004 and served on the board of directors for the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts from 2002 to 2007. Judge Long is a member and past president of the Washington County Bar Association.  He also is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association. Currently, he serves on the Criminal Law Section and the Committee on Lawyer Assistance.

A founding member of the Washington County Child Advocacy Center, Judge Long has also been a member of the Western Maryland Children’s Center Advisory Board since 2008 and has been its president since 2009. For more than 30 years, he has been a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown.

“I am honored to have been appointed to succeed Judge McDowell as the county’s administrative judge,” said Judge Long. “I look forward to continuing to work with and serve the people of Washington County.”
